Tryout Session Organization and Structure

Tryouts for all age levels shall be a minimum of 1.5 hours long. The organization of the tryout sessions shall be supervised by the head coach for each school grade. The tryouts shall consist of basic skills evaluation of passing, dribbling, shooting and playing competition. A standardized evaluation form will be used and evaluators shall tabulate scores immediately after each tryout.

 

Tryout Evaluation Criteria

Tryout sessions are intended to allow for coaches to assess players skills and abilities as they perform drills and scrimmage during the sessions.  Established assessment criteria provides for the evaluation of each player in the following categories.

 

·         Basic skills   Passing, Catching, Ball Handling, Shooting.

·         Playing Skills  - Offensive and defensive abilities.

·         Intangibles   Hustle, effort, athleticism, footwork, speed, quickness, court sense, etc.

·         Guard or Post Evaluation – Players will be evaluated separately based on playing position.

 

Player Evaluation

Coaches shall rate each player individually and shall tabulate the total score of each player. Coaches must note the date of tryouts, player #'s, player scores, total score, and must sign their name on each evaluation form. Player evaluations will be confidential, NO EXCEPTIONS!

 

Team Size

The recommendation for team size is a minimum of eight (8) players and a maximum of ten (10) players per team.  It is our intent to give as many qualified players as possible the opportunity to play basketball in their school grade and/or age group.  Coaches should be prepared to accept as many as 10 players on their teams. Deviations from the above will be forwarded by the Head Coach for the age group to the coaches committee for consideration.

 

Notification of Teams

All players making a team shall be notified by their team’s head coach.  All players not making a team shall be notified by the head coach. It is our intent to give as many qualified players as possible the opportunity to play basketball in their grade while staying with the team size recommendation.

 

Observation of Tryouts

Parents and other family members are encouraged to view the tryout sessions.  However, no parent or family member will be allowed on the courts during the tryout sessions.  Observations must occur from the bleacher area or balcony.  Parents / family members may only be on the courts if they are a coach or assistant coach.
